'The Fits' Trailer and Poster: First Look at Anna Rose Holmer's Frenetic Debut

Writer/director Anna Rose Holmer was among the breakout talents to emerge from the Venice Film Festival last fall, her debut feature “The Fits” winning critical plaudits and interest from distributors. Oscilloscope Laboratories picked up the film, which stars newcomer Royalty Hightower as an 11-year-old girl named Toni whose interest in boxing gives way to a fixation on dance when she sees older girls rehearsing their routine at her gym. Frenetic and tense, the footage puts us is in Toni’s headspace as she counts sit-ups, spars with an older boy and catches glimpses of the dancers’ movements from the sidelines. Unnerving music hums in the background throughout, giving the sense that this isn’t the typical quirky coming-of-age drama we’re used to seeing make waves at Sundance.

After premiering in Venice, “The Fits” went on to play Sundance and New Directors/New Films. Oscilloscope will release it on June 3.
