HBO has released an enigmatic teaser for “The Night Of,” a miniseries starring John Turturro and Riz Ahmed that premieres this July. How the premium-cable giant made the rookie mistake of not beginning with a teaser for the teaser remains unclear, but HBO has always done things its own way.
Though less than a minute long, the footage is certainly attention-grabbing. A body in a morgue, a young man (Ahmed) being interrogated by police with blood on his hands, a simple question: “What happened, Naz?” We’ve seen this kind of thing many times before, but all involved make it easy to give “The Night Of” the benefit of the doubt.
“The Night Of” is created by Steven Zaillian and Richard Price. The former won an Academy Award for his “Schindler’s List” screenplay and also wrote or co-wrote “Awakenings,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and “Moneyball;” Price is a novelist and screenwriter whose credits include five episodes of “The Wire.” Zaillian will direct seven of the show’s eight episodes, with James Marsh (“The Theory of Everything”) helming the eighth.
