'The Ring Vs The Grudge' Trailer: Japanese Horror Mashup Gets Wild First Trailer

Kadokawa and NBCUniversal have joined forces to bring two of the most terrifying movies together, “The Ring” and “The Grudge” in “Sadako vs. Kayako.” In the new trailer that was just released, we see the vengeful spirits from each franchise face off.

The film was originally an April Fool’s Day joke which went viral last year. After receiving abundant attention from fans, the studios decided to bring it to the big screen. Directed by Kōji Shiraishi, “The Ring vs. The Grudge” tells the tale of a girl, Yūri Kurahashi, that after watching a cursed videotape with her friend become targets for the murderous ghosts.

In the trailer, Sadako is seen crawling out of the TV, near the well, as seen in previous films, and terrorizing her victims. Meanwhile Kayako, who makes the eerie noises, is seen climbing down the stairs in the usual distorted manner until both evil spirits unite to battle it out. While the video doesn’t have subtitles, it’s pretty clear what is happening.

The horror film stars Mizuki Yamamoto, Tina Tamashiro and Aimi Satsukawa. The American remakes of “The Ring” and “The Grudge” were hits in the U.S., but their sequels didn’t go far. A third “The Ring” movie, “Rings,” directed by F. Javier Gutiérrez is slated to hit theaters Oct. 28 of this year to reboot the series.

“Sadako vs. Kayako” will be released in Japan on June 18.
