Not six months after “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens” and the “Rey-wakening” do we have another female-led “Star Wars” character entering our hearts as the new trailer for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” has hit the net.
But before you say, “Oh my goodness is that really another Death Star?” it’s useful to note that “Rogue One” is actually a prequel, even in some sense to 1977’s Episode IV “A New Hope.” Here, Felicity Jones, who was nominated for an Academy Award for playing Jane Hawking in “The Theory of Everything,” plays Jyn Erso, a member of the Rebel Alliance whose rebellious nature gets her into some trouble with the higher-ups, but which also makes her the perfect choice to head up a new mission.
The saga in this film revolves around Erso being tasked with stealing the plans to the Death Star, the very plans that Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) stows away inside R2-D2 and are found by Luke Skywalker in the first Star Wars outing. The storyline was inspired by a part of the opening crawl of the first film, which reads: “During the battle, rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the Death Star…”
Having a second “Star Wars” film in a row where the main protagonist is female calls for a celebration. Naturally, Internet rumors are already starting to circulate that Jones’ character may be Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) mother. The timing would make sense, but not every so-called strong female character in the “Star Wars” universe has to be related. But like Rey before her (or I guess, after her), Jyn seems like she’s going to be pretty awesome.
Not only is the existence Jyn Erso some great news, but the return of another popular character is making fans lose their minds. “Rogue One” A Star Wars Story” features the appearance of none other than Mon Mothma, and the Twitter-verse is freaking out:
well i didn’t EXPECT to be almost tearing up over the very existence of Mon Mothma this morning but here we are

Who knew that we would one day see Mon Mothma, Stately Lesbian Queen of the Rebel Alliance, in another movie?

Back in 1983, Rebel Alliance leader Mon Mothma was played by Caroline Blakiston. No actress for Mon Mothma appears on “Rogue One”‘s IMDb page (nor does any other woman aside from Jones for that matter), but it’s possible the actress playing her is Geneivive O’Reilly, who played the character in a scene for “Revenge of the Sith” that ended up on the cutting room floor. Even so, the conversation between Jyn Erso and Mon Mothma means the trailer alone for “Rogue One” passes the Bechdel test, and that makes us grateful for this galaxy far, far away.
