The Tribeca Film Festival may not have the longevity of prestige events like Cannes, Venice or Toronto, but it’s carved out quite the history for itself over the past decade plus. From hosting premieres for some of the biggest blockbusters of all time to spotlighting foreign cinema that wouldn’t otherwise make it to U.S. shores, Tribeca seems unlike any other festival currently on the circuit. Freed from the constraints of awards season, Tribeca is full of small discoveries that hopefully will gain traction through the summer and fall.
With the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival officially underway through April 24, we went diving into the archives to learn as much we could about the history of the New York-based festival. The result is the quiz below, which may be rather tough considering Tribeca’s legacy is not a well-documented affair, but it provides some eye-opening insight into the many gems of Tribeca’s past. For instance, did you know that the first Tribeca Film Festival opened with one huge intergalactic franchise sequel? We won’t spoil anything, but test your Tribeca smarts above.
