True stories are tricky. Most stand-up comics use their big break to play slightly altered versions of themselves, often inspired by day-to-day events and occasionally riffing on their actual past. Rarely is the content told as personally as what can be found in an onscreen autobiography.

But Maria Bamford isn’t your typical stand-up comedian.

The popular comic, podcast host and actress has teamed up with “Arrested Development” creator Mitch Hurwitz for a new Netflix original series about “what Bamford has accepted to be ‘her life.'” In the first trailer (see above), Bamford plays herself during a time in her life when she was pushed to her breaking point and, well, broke. “Lady Dynamite” looks to track what happened and how she picked up the pieces to find a better version of herself.

Or, if you prefer the language of Netflix’s official synopsis: “The occasionally surreal episodes, refracted across multiple periods inspired by the actor/comedian’s life, tell the story of a woman who loses- and then finds- her s**t.”

“Lady Dynamite” will premiere all 12, 30-minute episodes of its first season on May 20. Watch the trailer above.
