Bill Simmons' 'Any Given Wednesday' Trailer: New HBO Show Is Sure to Court Controversy

Bill Simmons has been a firebrand for as long as he’s been a brand, and that doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon. The longtime ESPN employee, who served as editor-in-chief of Grantland among many other duties before leaving the network last year, signed an exclusive multiyear deal with HBO last year. It’s about to come to fruition with his new talk show “Any Given Wednesday with Bill Simmons,” the first trailer for which is available now.

“I’m Bill Simmons and here’s what I believe,” the “Sports Guy” says by way of introduction. His first belief? “The defending NBA champs should wear championship belts to every game. (Simmons is a noted pro-wrestling fan.) He lays down several more opinions in the minute-long promo, most related to sports and pop culture but a few wading into the arena of politics — a mix of hot takes (“Every DiCaprio movie would be just a little bit better as a Matt Damon movie”) and populism (“Billionaires should pay for their own fucking football stadiums”).

Simmons is also in the process of rolling out The Ringer, a sort of spiritual successor to Grantland. HBO will air the first episode of “Any Given Wednesday” on June 22 (a Wednesday, for those of you keeping score at home).
