Christopher Nolan's 'Dunkirk': First On-Set Photos Reveal Gritty Look At the War Epic

The wheels are officially in motion on “Dunkirk,” director Christopher Nolan‘s follow up to “Interstellar.” The movie is scheduled to be released in 2017.

A Warner Bros. press release confirmed that filming has begun in Dunkirk, France on the World War II drama, and Italian site Cinefilos recently posted the first images from the production, taken by photographer Pierre Volot. Check out the photos here.

The images hint at the gritty and authentic look of the film, which Nolan also wrote. Here’s what Warner Bros. had to say about the production in the press release:

“Dunkirk” opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.

Dunkirk stars Nolan regulars Tom Hardy (Inception) and Cillian Murphy (The Dark Knight Rises), Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), Kenneth Branagh (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit), One Direction singer Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, Jack Lowden, James D’Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Tom Glynn-Carney and newcomer Fionn Whitehead. Nolan will be producing alongside Emma Thomas as well. The film will be shot on both IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-formats and will be released on July 21st, 2017.
