FilmBox LT: The Very First Airport Cinema in Eastern and Northern Europe

Almost
a year ago, the Lithuanian Film Centre, in collaboration with Vilnius Airport
and the support of Gediminas
Almantas, CEO at SE Lithuanian Airports,
launched
a highly innovative and progressive project: FilmBox LT, the very first airport
cinema in Eastern and Northern Europe.

Now,
the passengers traveling through Vilnius airport are able to enjoy a
pre-flight film as much as an in-flight film. The theatre screens Lithuanian
shorts – live–action, animation and documentary in cooperation with the
Lithuanian Short Film Agency. The screening is organized in three programs and
the repertoire is refreshed regularly, depending on the production of short
films.  Moreover, in order to offer
the audiences a more intriguing repertoire, FilmBox LT also showcases shorts
from a different country every month.

This new tradition was launched by the
Latvian National Film Centre in October 2015. Since then, FilmBox LT has
presented the best recent shorts from Estonia, Latvia, Denmark, Sweden and
France as well as a Eurochannel short film program. Because of the focus on
Poland during the Meeting Point Vilnius industry event at the Vilnius Film
Festival, the focal country of the month of April was Poland.

“It’s
kind of a perfect possibility to know other countries’ short films and our
country’s short films because short films usually do not have many
possibilities to screen except for short film festivals,” said Liana Ruokytė-Jonsson, one of the initiators of
FilmBox LT and the Head of Film Promotion, Information and Heritage Department
of the Lithuanian Film Centre, adding that “this is one of the finest examples
in Lithuania and elsewhere of how business and cultural institutions can
cooperate by focusing on feelings and experiences of people rather than profit.”

Furthermore,
the public’s reaction has been very positive so far. According to the
Lithuanian Film Centre, people who never go to the cinema now visit FilmBox LT
and certain passengers come to the airport early to check-in in order to see
the films. The movie theatre is also a hit among the airport staff who visit it on their lunch breaks.

The
Film Box LT cinema is located in the departure area of Vilnius Airport, next to
Gate A2. Its opening hours depend on flight schedules but films are screened
from the first flight to the last flight of the day. There are no breaks and
commercials, the films screening on the loop and for free.
