Short trailers for longer trailers are ever more prominent lately, with a 30-second clip for “Inferno” being the latest case in point. Following 2006’s “The Da Vinci Code” and 2009’s “Angels & Demons,” the upcoming film marks the third adaptation of a Dan Brown novel with Ron Howard behind the camera and Tom Hanks in front of it.

The new teaser presents its audience with the same moral dilemma Robert Langdon (Hanks) is faced with in the film: “There’s a switch,” we’re told via ominous narration. “If you throw it, half the people on Earth will die. But if you don’t, in 100 years the human race will be extinct.” Thought experiments like this have been a staple of philosophy for ages, and many a thriller has hinged its plot around them as well. Langdon, a Harvard symbologist who can’t seem to stay out of trouble in Europe’s cultural centers, is once again on the wrong end of a manhunt in “Inferno.”
With a script by David Koepp, the film co-stars Felicity Jones, Omar Sy, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Ben Foster and Irrfan Khan. “Inferno” is being released stateside on October 28 of this year.
