'Queen of the South' Exclusive Teaser: The Drug War Has a New Matriarch


Ahead of its premiere next month, “Queen of the South” is premiering a new teaser exclusively on Indiewire. Alice Braga stars in the new series, an adaptation of the same best-selling novel that provided the source material for “La Reina del Sur” — a highly profitable telenovela produced by Telemundo. Braga plays a woman who absconds to America in the aftermath of her boyfriend’s murder in Mexico.

“There’s a flower that grows in the darkness,” our heroine is told in the opening moments. “You are one of those flowers, so you may as well bloom, because it’s going to be dark for a while.” That ominous pronouncement is delivered by the drug-trade matriarch Braga runs into, who ends up making life north of the border a far cry from the American Dream.

Braga first came to international attention following her performance in “City of God” and has since appeared in films like “I Am Legend” and “Elysium.” Justina Machado, Hemky Madera, Veronica Falcon, James Martinez and Joaquim de Almeida all co-star alongside her. “Queen of the South” premieres on USA Network on June 23.
