David Farr’s “The Ones Below” follows Kate (Clémence Poésy) and Justin (Stephen Campbell Moore), a young, happy couple who live in a tiny London suburb and eagerly await their first child. When another couple Teresa (Laura Birn) and Jon (David Morrissey) move in downstairs, Kate and Justin decide to meet the neighbors only to discover that they’re awaiting their first child as well after seven years of trying. Teresa and Jon quickly resent Kate and Justin’s easy pregnancy and seemingly care-free life and soon tensions between the two families bubble up to the surface in disquieting ways.
Feeding off a Polanski-esque paranoid, “The Ones Below” captures the fraught emotions of early parenthood and the discomfort of meeting new neighbors, and David Farr crafts a tense psychodrama out of the emotional mixture. Watch an exclusive clip above featuring an uncomfortable dinner party between the two couples. Farr describes the scene as such: ” It’s one of those dinner parties. New neighbors downstairs. You invite them up. She’s pregnant. So are you. She’s fun. She’s a ray of sunshine. You’ve lots in common. Or so you think. But do any of us really know what our neighbors are really up to.”
Farr is best known as an accomplished British theater director. He has served as the Artistic Director at The Gale Theater, the British Old Vic, and the Lyric Hammersmith. In 2009, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company as Associate Director. He has penned the screenplay to Joe Wright’s “Hanna” and the BBC One/AMC miniseries “The Night Manager.” “The Ones Below” is his directorial debut.
“The Ones Below” will be released in theaters and on demand on May 27th.
