What with it being the best shark movie in ages and all, “The Shallows” has “Jaws” back on moviegoers’ minds. That includes the folks at Screen Junkies, whose latest Honest Trailer is dedicated to Steven Spielberg’s summertime classic. The innovative blockbuster is “one of the scariest monster movies of all time — with barely any monster in it,” intones the narrator. Watch below.
Among the main jokes: pointing toward the mayor (who refuses to shut down the obviously dangerous beach lest it ruin the seaside town’s 4th of July festivities) as the real monster, calling Richard Dreyfuss’ character the “original Instagram hipster” and blaming “Jaws” for the decades of unnecessary sequels that have followed in its wake.
As for that other shark movie, “The Shallows” made just shy of $17 million in its opening weekend — not exactly blockbuster numbers, but a good start for a surprisingly strong entry in a genre that’s had few worthy successors to Spielberg’s iconic progenitor.
