If you thought the first season of Netflix’s “Marco Polo” didn’t have quite enough warfare, martial arts, sex and intrigue, the new trailer for Season 2 is taking it to the next level. The video, released today, reveals that the titular adventurer has joined forces with his former enemy, now ally, Kublai Khan. “This foreigner saved my life,” reasons Khan when confronted about his newfound trust in the Italian explorer.
Season 1 of “Marco Polo” follows Polo (Lorzeno Richelmy) as he discovers and infiltrates the Mongol Empire in 13th century China. One of Netflix’s most expensive original series, the first season reportedly cost $90 million and shot in Italy, Kazakhstan and Malaysia (since producers couldn’t actually get permission to film in China).
The 10 episode second season will go deeper into the relationship between Polo and Khan (Benedict Wong) as the conquerer attempts to widen his empire and deals with a new challenger to his throne. The trailer reveals the return of familiar characters and new faces alike, including fan favorite Hundred Eyes (Tom Wu). Oh, and if you’re getting a “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” vibe from the second season already, it’s probably thanks to the addition of iconic Chinese actress and action star Michelle Yeoh.
Season 2 of “Marco Polo” releases on Netflix July 1. Check out the trailer below.
