“Star Trek” fans could use some good news right now, so it should come as a welcome development that the fan-made “Axanar” film is forging ahead despite a lawsuit that threatens to stop it in its tracks. (J.J. Abrams recently announced that CBS and Paramount had dropped the suit, but it seems he spoke prematurely.) A minute-long teaser called “Honor Through Victory” has been released; go boldly where few fans have gone before and watch it below.
“Long have we watched the scourge of humanity spreading through space, daring to encroach upon our birthright,” a rather angry-sounding voice intones in the opening moments. “Star Trek: Axanar” was funded via a Kickstarter campaign that raised $638,000 and, per the project’s description, concerns the “Four Years War, the war with the Klingon Empire that almost tore the Federation apart, and whose resolution solidified the Federation and allowed it to become the entity we know in Kirk’s time.”
The project’s future remains uncertain, what with the full force of a major studio’s legal team up against it and all. Until that situation resolves itself, “Star Trek: Axanar” is without a release date; “Star Trek Beyond,” meanwhile, hits theaters on July 22.
