Henson also explains why she can't rely on herself to make Cookie Lyon one of the craziest characters on TV.

With the official opening of Emmy voting this week, acting FYC campaigns and highlight reels for television’s favorite actors are flooding the internet. None, however, feature quite as many catfights and flying cocktails as Fox’s clip show for Taraji P. Henson as Cookie Lyon on “Empire.”

In the video, Henson takes the opportunity to make the distinction between herself and her ferocious onscreen persona: “You might think I’m crazy, but I think acting is allowing these characters to use your body as a vessel. A lot of times, I can’t listen to Taraji, so she doesn’t cloud the life of this character.”

Describing the drama of “Empire,” she continues, “It’s reality based in soap opera, so sometimes the writing is so big and so outlandish… and it’s your job as the actor to make it work, to take this bigness and plant it back into reality.”

Henson won a Golden Globe earlier this year for her portrayal of the fierce Lyons family matriarch, and according to IndieWire TV Critic Ben Travers, she has a good shot at a third Emmy nomination this year.
