‘Doctor Strange’ New Trailer: Trippy Visuals (and Whitewashing) Mark SDCC Footage

Marvel unveiled the new spot at a small gathering in San Diego.

As you may have heard, a small gathering of like-minded fans is taking place in San Diego this weekend. Marvel is among the most well-represented studios at Comic-Con, of course, and perhaps its most highly anticipated offering this year is “Doctor Strange,” which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the eponymous superhero. Watch the film’s newly released trailer below.

Tilda Swinton’s casting as the Ancient One, a character conceived of and previously portrayed as Tibetan, has made “Doctor Strange” part of this year’s ongoing whitewashing debate along with the upcoming “Ghost in the Shell.” Her character, a sagacious mentor who’s been retconned as Celtic, is on prominent display here as she helps Strange unlock his supernatural abilities; the trailer also offers glimpses of Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong and Mads Mikkelsen.

Scott Derrickson, who previously directed “Sinister” and a remake of “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” is helming “Doctor Strange.” The film is set to be released on November 4.
