If you weren’t happy with how “Hot Tub Time Machine 2” turned out — which, based on on its critical and financial reception, you probably weren’t — then you have something in common with at least one of its stars. Rob Corddry, in a new Eqsuire interview, bemoans the film’s disappointing box-office returns and suggests that the future of comedies is on VOD, as viewers “don’t run out to the movie theater” to see them.
He also a recalls an email he wrote to everyone involved on the film during its opening weekend, at which point he felt “the writing was on the wall.” Corddry told his colleagues and executives that “we have a chance here — and I know you’re gonna say ‘No’ because this is crazy — but rip it out of theaters right now. Take it out of theaters on Monday, raise your middle fingers to the old model, and say ‘This belongs here, and we’re gonna figure out how to make as much money that way.’ That’s the problem we’ll work on, but we’re gonna watch it this way — the way it should be watched.”
Though it was by necessity rather than by choice, that’s how most people watched “The Interview” just two months prior. As VOD numbers aren’t made public the same way box-office figures are, however, it’s unknown how much money the film made that way.
