Brett Haley’s 2015 film “I’ll See You In My Dreams” was a surprise hit out of Sundance, and now he’s got a new film in the pipeline with a star-studded cast to boot. Re-teaming with screenwriter Marc Basch, Haley’s next film is titled “The Hero,” and it stars “I’ll See You In My Dreams” co-star Sam Elliott, as well as Laura Prepon (“Orange Is the New Black”), Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation”), Krysten Ritter (“Jessica Jones”), and Katherine Ross (“The Graduate”).
The film follows film star Lee Hayden (Elliott), whose Western film icon days are in the rearview mirror. In the present day, he makes money doing voiceovers but spends most of his spare time smoking pot and hanging out with his friend Jeremy (Offerman). But when Lee receives life-changing news, he decides he wants to take stock of everything and reprise his celebrated role as “The Hero,” in a sequel to the Western of the same name. Along the way, he tries to reconnect with his wife (Ross) and daughter (Ritter), and meets a young standup (Prepon) with a journey of her own.
Haley’s previous film “I’ll See You In My Dreams” follows a widow and aging songstress (Blythe Danner) who falls into a predictable, boring routine in old age, until she meets a mysterious stranger (Sam Elliott) who provides her with the confidence to adopt a new lease on life.
“The Hero” will be released sometime in 2017.
