Today, Project Greenlight Digital Studios and the crowdfunding platform Seed&Spark have announced the grand prize winner of #UntoldStory Crowdfunding Rally. Documentarian Chelsea Hernandez won for her film “Building the American Dream,” which explores the exploitation of undocumented workers on Texas construction sites. This announcement was made at the release party for the sixth issue of BRIGHT IDEAS magazine at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles on August 10th.
“Winning this contest helps validate not only the artistic quality and trust in me to make the film but also signifies the film’s importance,” said Hernandez. “More than ever before, documentaries have the ability to disrupt and influence change.”
This past March, Seed&Spark and Project Greenlight put out a call for submissions for the next great Untold Story in documentary, specifically looking for feature documentaries examining a story or perspective people haven’t seen before.
“People often think that crowdfunding is about fueling a particular artist or a particular project, but with the #UntoldStory rally we aimed to show that crowdfunding can have a much wider impact,” said Emily Best, CEO of Seed&Spark. “Over 15,000 people rallied behind the nineteen documentaries that made it to the finals. Filmmakers — and those who support them — make a difference.”
The end of this rally is only the beginning for Hernandez and the other Untold Story finalists. All of them qualified for a Seed&Spark Filmmaker Gift Box, which includes over $8k in resources, including a hard drive from G-Technology, consultations with industry experts, festival fee waivers, and more.
Seed&Spark is currently seeking submissions for their second crowdfunding rally in partnership with SeriesFest, the New Voice Crowdfunding Rally for original series with diverse characters.
