HBO dramas are rarely for the faint of heart, and their latest offering sure looks like it’s keeping with tradition. “Westworld,” Jonathan Nolan’s upcoming science fiction drama starring Anthony Hopkins and Evan Rachel Wood, takes place in a theme park where robots and humans walk side by side without one knowing the other. Because of this, the park’s guests allow themselves to push the limitations of the human experience, be it with a gunfight at the O.K. Corral or an old-fashioned foursome in the old west.

The trailer showcases plenty of this, as the series’ cast goes to various extremes to discover the truth about their surroundings and themselves. Co-starring Ed Harris, James Marsden, Jeffrey Wright and Thandie Newton, the new series promises to push the limits itself — the limits of what we can expect from a television show, especially in the visual effects department.

HBO’s official synopsis reads as follows: “‘Westworld’ is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin, exploring a world in which every human appetite, no matter how noble or depraved, can be indulged. The one-hour drama series kicks off its 10-episode season exclusively on HBO. Created for television by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, both of whom are executive producing and writing, with Nolan also directing, the series was inspired by the 1973 motion picture “Westworld,” written and directed by Michael Crichton. Executive producers J.J. Abrams, Jerry Weintraub, Bryan Burk.

HBO has also released a new website that encourages visitors to “live without limits.” Check out DiscoverWestworld.com for more details, and watch the new trailer below. “Westworld” premieres October 2 at 9pm on HBO, HBO NOW and HBO Go.
