‘The New Edition Story’ First Clip: ‘Empire’ Star Bryshere Y. Gray Brings the Band To Life in BET Movie

The biopic follows New Edition from their time as kids in Boston to becoming global stars.

BET will air “The New Edition Story,” about the famed music group New Edition, as a six-hour, three-night event on January 24, 25, and 26, 2017. The biopic tells the story of how the group laid the foundation for boy bands like Boyz II Men, N’SYNC, The Backstreet Boys, and New Kids On The Block.

New Edition was comprised of Ronnie Devoe, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Mike Bivins, Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill. “Empire” star Bryshere Y. Gray will play Bivins as an adult and Dante Hoagland will play Michael as a child. The rest of the cast includes:

  • Elijah Kelley as the adult Bell and Caleb McLaughlin as the younger Bell.
  • Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Luke James as Gill.
  • Algee Smith as the adult Tresvant and Jahi Winston as the younger Tresvant.
  • Keith Powers as the adult Devoe and Myles Truitt as the younger Devoe.
  • Woody McClain as the adult Bobby Brown and Tyler Williams as the younger Brown.

The biopic focuses on the group from their time as kids in Boston to becoming global stars, enduring controversy, personnel changes, and the price of mega fame.
