‘The Young Pope’ Red Band Trailer: Jude Law Declares Himself God in Paolo Sorrentino’s HBO Miniseries

The Oscar winner's foray into television just premiered its first two episodes in Venice.

Is age the definitive theme of Paolo Sorrentino’s oeuvre? After “The Great Beauty,” “Youth,” and now “The Young Pope,” it’s certainly beginning to look that way. The Oscar-winning Italian filmmaker just premiered the first two hours of his foray into long-form television at the Venice Film Festival, and “The Young Pope” now has a 16-and-over trailer from our friends in England ahead of its small-screen debut. Jude Law stars as the pontiff of the title, the youngest in history — as well as the first to hail from America. “I don’t have any sins to confess,” he declares in the trailer’s opening moments. “I’m a contradiction. I’m God.” That humble attitude will surely serve him well in the palace intrigue to follow, with many openly declaring themselves his enemy.

Diane Keaton, James Cromwell, and Silvio Orlando co-star in the miniseries, which will consist of 10 episodes. “The Young Pope” is set to premiere on HBO later this year.
