Is age the definitive theme of Paolo Sorrentino’s oeuvre? After “The Great Beauty,” “Youth,” and now “The Young Pope,” it’s certainly beginning to look that way. The Oscar-winning Italian filmmaker just premiered the first two hours of his foray into long-form television at the Venice Film Festival, and “The Young Pope” now has a 16-and-over trailer from our friends in England ahead of its small-screen debut. Find it below.
Jude Law stars as the pontiff of the title, the youngest in history — as well as the first to hail from America. “I don’t have any sins to confess,” he declares in the trailer’s opening moments. “I’m a contradiction. I’m God.” That humble attitude will surely serve him well in the palace intrigue to follow, with many openly declaring themselves his enemy.
Diane Keaton, James Cromwell, and Silvio Orlando co-star in the miniseries, which will consist of 10 episodes. “The Young Pope” is set to premiere on HBO later this year.
