“Straight Outta Compton” was among the most successful films of 2015, making more than $200 million worldwide, earning favorable reviews and ultimately receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Not everyone was enthusiastic about the N.W.A. biopic, however: Lifetime’s “Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge & Michel’le,” which aired last night, told Dr. Dre’s former girlfriend’s side of the story, and Eazy-E’s daughter Ebie Wright has launched a Kickstarter to do similarly.
Eazy (real name Eric Wright) emerges as something of an antagonist in “Straight Outta Compton,” a characterization his daughter takes issue with. “A Ruthless Scandal: No More Lies,” a documentary seeking $250,000 in funding, will delve into what the project’s Kickstarter page describes as “the conspiracy and scandal” surrounding Eazy-E’s death at age 31.
“The stories that we’re telling are mainly about the scandal surrounding my father’s death,” Ebie told Rolling Stone in a recent interview. “But we also wanted to show his accomplishments, his personal life and, really, the aftermath of his demise and what happened to us. We never felt the story that was told to the public was the truth. It’s just something that has always pained us.”
