The new Disney animated musical film “Moana” has many things going for it: It features music co-written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the man behind the smash hit musical “Hamilton”; it’s directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, the co-directors of such acclaimed Disney musicals like “The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” and most recently, “The Princess and the Frog”; and it also co-stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as a larger-than-life demigod. Watch a new clip from the film below, which features The Rock’s Maui making his grand introduction to young tribal princess Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) on a mission to save her family.
Set on a mystic island in Polynesia, the film follows Moana, the 16-year-old daughter of Chief Tui and a born navigator, who learns of a terrible monster that threatens her family and her home. She sets sail to defeat the threat and along the way meets Maui, a legendary shape-shifting demigod, who joins her on her mission to take on the monster.
Johnson first gained fame as a WWF wrestler from 1996 to 2004, but later transitioned into acting full-time. He’s best known for his work in the “Fast and the Furious” series, his starring role in the HBO series “Ballers,” “Pain & Gain,” “Central Intelligence,” and more.
“Moana” will open nationwide on November 23 from Walt Disney Studios.
