‘Beware the Slenderman’ Trailer: HBO Documentary Explores How a Meme Inspired an Attempted Murder

Irene Taylor Brodsky's film first premiered at SXSW this year.

If you spend much time online, by now you’ll have heard of Slenderman: an internet myth that ceased to be just a digital phenomenon when two young girls attempted to murder a classmate in his (its?) name. HBO’s documentary about the strange case, “Beware the Slenderman,” has released its first trailer. Watch it below.

The 90-second trailer opens with “Blair Witch”–style footage before cutting to news footage in the aftermath of the incident and interviews with people attempting to explain how things got so out of control. Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, both 12 years old at the time, developed such an intense fixation on Slenderman that they decided the only way to prove his existence was by murdering an 11-year-old classmate in the woods; fortunately, their would-be victim survived.

That didn’t stop the story from taking off, of course, and two years later people connected to the attempted murderer are still attempting to understand it. Irene Taylor Brodsky directed “Beware the Slender Man,” which first premiered at South by Southwest earlier this year. It will next screen at DOC NYC this Saturday before airing on HBO on January 23, 2017.
