Conventional Oscar wisdom is that musicals are favored in this category, along with complex, layered action movies.  That would make Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land” a strong contender, but his naturalistic, low key approach to the song performances may not play well with the overall Academy. Best Picture contenders “Arrival” and Mel Gibson’s World War II actioner “Hacksaw Ridge” are also competitive, along with massive effects spectacle “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”

Contenders (ranked in order of likelihood to win)

  1. Ai-Ling Lee, Steven Morrow and Andy Nelson (“La La Land”)
  2. Peter Grace, Kevin O’Connell, Andy Wright and Robert Mackenzie (“Hacksaw Ridge”)
  3. Bernard Gariépy Strobl and Claude La Haye (“Arrival”)
  4. Christopher Scarabosio, Stuart Wilson and David Parker (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”)
  5. Greg P. Russell, Mac Ruth, Gary Summers, and Jeffrey J. Haboush (“13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi”)
