2016 IndieWire Critics Poll: Anne-Katrin Titze

Anne-Katrin Titze

Eye For Film

Additional Comments:

This was a year of marvelous, important performances by women. Aquarius stowed our age into a Brazilian building by the sea and onto the face of Sônia Braga. Isabelle Huppert’s lionhearted explorations of her art, Annette Bening packing the most intimate glances inward and the spirit of a century into one soaring performance, the adventurous nature of Amy Adams, Ruth Negga reminding the world of what love is, Hayley Squires reminding us what hunger is, or even Nicole Kidman, who within a few minutes of screen time in Lion shifts the understanding of adoption. If it sometimes takes being tricked into awareness with laughter, there is no better guide than Samuele, the little boy from Fire at Sea (Fuocoammare), whose life barely touches the refugee crisis. He is our surrogate with the lazy eye, whileToni Erdmann could be our furry teutonic shadow. 2016, a year marred by hostility on so many fronts, my shining moments experienced in the cinema were those of sudden awareness – new interconnections that give a fresh perspective on what merely seemed familiar. Splendid performances did this, as well as filmmakers whose risks paid off.Vincent Lindon, Casey Affleck, Joel Edgerton, gave mostly silent dignity to very different types of torment. Ezra Edelman’s O.J.: Made in America connected the unsettled dots.
