Additional Comments:

People asked me about “The Neon Demon,” “How can you like a movie that’s so STUPID?” If only it could be as stupid as Refn, that I could be so brilliant. A picture like “The Neon Demon” really describes the limits of “film criticism.” It is in some senses *stupid,* deliberately so; shallow; predictable; its critiques of L.A. and of beauty culture are of the level of a Bravo series. And yet, the greatness of “The Neon Demon” –and I think this is a unique ingredient of cinema–is that the poetry is between the lines. It’s in the images, in the mixture of color, beautiful faces, abstract settings, camera movement, editing, and, above all, music. It finds a haunting poetry in between the grooves of delectable eye candy. A friend described the picture as “a funeral elegy to the L.A. that was, and to America generally.” Can’t people see their way into *the experience of* seeing a movie, and get past the plot summary and the marketing materials?
