After this week’s surprising news that Michael Sheen is retiring from acting to become a full-time activist, the “Masters of Sex” star has made an important clarification on his Tumblr: “I DID NOT declare that I’m ‘quitting acting and leaving Hollywood’ to go into politics.” (In related news, Michael Sheen has a Tumblr.)
The original announcement, based on an interview Sheen held with the Times of London, has been widely circulated, with his supposed retirement interpreted as having been a reaction to Brexit and Donald Trump. “In the same way as the Nazis had to be stopped in Germany in the Thirties,” Sheen said of what he now calls “anti-democratic forces,” “this thing that is on the rise has to be stopped.”
“I certainly did NOT equate people who voted for Brexit or Trump with a fascistic ‘hard right’ that must be stopped,” Sheen continues in his Tumblr post, pointing out that his own hometown voted for Brexit and the surprise referendum reflects the will of the people. And while he won’t be quitting the stage or screen anytime soon, the actor clarifies that at some point down the line he may “work less as an actor and maybe even stop for a while.” So if you’re worried that this month’s “Passengers” will be the last time you’ll see him in a movie theater, fret not — at least for now.
