Production will begin in March on the pilot, which Sutter co-wrote with James. Sutter will direct the pilot episode and serve as executive producer, while James will be co-executive producer.
According to FX, the new show “is set in a post Jax Teller world, where EZ Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the Cali/Mexi border, struggles with his desire for vengeance against the cartel, and his need for respect from the women he loves.”
The Mayans club was a part of “Sons of Anarchy” and its seven seasons. (The show ended its run in 2014). “I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice,” Sutter said of James in a statement last May, when the show’s script was first announced. “Because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice.”
“Mayans MC” represents Sutter’s return to FX following the short-lived “The Bastard Executioner.” His other credits include “The Shield,” the feature “Southpaw” and a recently announced comic book collaboration with BOOM! Studios. James’ credits include the feature “Little Birds” and is set to direct “A Million Little Pieces.”
Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions are behind “Mayans MC.”
