There was a lot of talk in press lines that this was somehow a weaker Sundance than last year, but I have to disagree with that. I think the major works were less obvious going in – filmmakers who were acclaimed but had not yet attained a devoted critical fanbase really made their mark (David Lowery with “A Ghost Story,” Luca Guadagnino with “Call Me By Your Name,” Dee Rees with “Mudbound”), and some truly remarkable films just went overlooked in general for one reason or another (“Frantz,” “Person to Person,” and “Tokyo Idols” for me). Meanwhile, I saw 17 films, and still feel like I missed out on another 17 that had a real, demonstrable impact, which is not an issue I faced last year. I was feeling a little uncertain coming in, but now that I’m back home, I wish I was still there catching up on everything I missed. And seeing “A Ghost Story” again and again and again.
