The Telluride Film Festival may be the first indication of fall movie hype and early awards buzz, but the Toronto International Film Festival is a much more daunting affair. With 255 movies, it finds a lot of new, buzzy titles vying for attention alongside existing Oscar season hopefuls and other films that exist entirely outside of that equation. In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson sit down on the eve of TIFF to discuss what they’ve seen, what they hope to see in the days to come (like “mother!”, above), and where the burgeoning awards race now stands.
