Review: 'The Oranges' Is Dated, Schtick-Reliant Suburban Satire

There’s another era that would have welcomed the chaste suburban sex comedy “The Oranges.” In an earlier time, this mock-revealing story of two families coming apart due to infidelity would have seemed appalling, transgressive. Perhaps as a low-heat exploitation picture threatening to expose the cha...

'The Oranges' Star Alia Shawkat Discusses Her Time Spent on 'Arrested Development' and the Possibility of Shaving Her Head Someday

This isn’t Alia Shawkat’s first rodeo. Best known for her role as Maeby Fünke on Fox’s Emmy award winning "Arrested Development," Shawkat has been acting in both television and film since she was in her pre-teens. More recently, Shawkat starred in the indie comedy "Cedar Rapids" opposite Ed Helms an...

Sundance: 'That's What She Said' Director Carrie Preston Keeps Men Out Of Frame In Woody Allen Style Comedy

Carrie Preston is best known as the ditzy-and-frustrated waitress Arlene Fowler on "True Blood" (and lately, as the ditzy-but-brilliant lawyer Elisbeth Tascioni on "The Good Wife"), but this year at Sundance, she'll be known as a film director for "That's What She Said," her sophomore feature effort...

'Arrested Development' Movie Edges Closer To Reality, New Mini-Season Promised & 2013 Release Eyed

Showtime & Netflix Currently Vying For The Rights To Season 4The "Arrested Development" movie is the great white whale of internet fandom of the past few years. Originally airing in 2003, Mitchell Hurwitz's Fox sitcom has, over the years, enshrined its place as one of the great comedy series of all ...

'Arrested Development' Cast Gets Back Together For The New Yorker Festival

While it has been five years since Fox pulled the plug and "Arrested Development" went off the air, rumors of a potential movie have been rampant, but Hollywood (and series creator and writer Mitch Hurwitz) has so far been unable to wrangle everybody back together for one more story with the Bluth f...

TIFF '11 Review: 'The Oranges' Delivers A Grove Of Big Laughs

The indie ensemble comedy genre is fraught with pitfalls, from high concepts that just don't deliver, to outrageous storylines that can't sustain their own frenzied energy. For every "Little Miss Sunshine" there are countless more that attempt to create that film's almost intangible alchemy but falter somewhere along the way. "The Oranges" could have gone either way - with Julian Farino a mostly TV director ("Entourage," "How To Make It In America") making his sophomore film with a grab bag cast including Hugh Laurie, Catherine Keener, Oliver Platt, Allison Janney, Alia Shawkat, Adam Brody and Leighton Meeste,r we really had no idea what to e...

With rumors of an "Arrested Development" film refusing to die, stars of the defunct Fox show continue to ride the wave of the cult classic. Jason Bateman and Michael Cera have obviously made the most of their time on the Ron Howard-narrated show, but another star is beginning to spread her wings as ...

Bill Hader Drops More Casting On 'The Hand Job' Starring Aubrey Plaza

SNL Funnyman Says Andy Samberg, Alia Shawkat, Mae Whitman, Johnny Simmons, Donald Glover & More Will Star In Film Written By His WifeEXCLUSIVE: We haven't been shy in expressing our infatuation with comedic actress Aubrey Plaza. Though she doesn't have too many notches on her belt, her turns in "Funny People," "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" and "Parks and Recreation" are extremely impressive, displaying a young talent with a knack for comedic timing and wit. Whether it's keeping up with Seth Rogen's deadpan, dry deliveries in Judd Apatow's last picture or actively (and abrasively) berating Michael Cera in Edgar Wright's underrated gem, Plaza d...

Review: 'Cedar Rapids' Provides A Trickle Of Laughs Instead Of A Torrent

On paper, "Cedar Rapids" sounds like a no brainer. The Frank Capra-esque premise is familiar: a small town man is sent off to the big city where he struggles to adjust to the fast pace and shifty morals of metropolitan life. And when you line up a stacked roster of talent that includes John C. Reilly, Anne Heche, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Sigourney Weaver, Alia Shawkat, Rob Corddry and Stephen Root, the movie should pretty much just write itself. Figuratively speaking, that is. But unfortunately, Miguel Arteta seems to have literally taken what was probably a great treatment and hoped that his actors and actresses could do the rest with unfortunate...
