Adèle Exarchopoulos Celebrates 'Bastille Day,' Michael Shannon Joins 'Freeheld' With Ellen Page & More

Despite roles in blockbusters like “Prometheus,” “Thor” and “Pacific Rim,” Idris Elba still hasn’t had that one role that would catapult him into a household name—sorry, “The Wire” doesn’t count—but he’ll be getting his shot at the spotlight with the previously-announced action vehicle “Bastille Day...

Review: Randall Miller's 'CBGB' A Half-Hearted Sitcom Stab At Punk Rock's Mecca

It takes a lot of effort to take the underdog stomping grounds of New York's top punk acts and turn them into the Central Perk from “Friends”—albeit with slightly more stain—but “CBGB” does it with total conviction. This isn't necessarily a bad thing; we've long passed the ellipses of punk's heyday,...

Review: 'The Rebound' Starring Catherine Zeta-Jones Is A Loose Ball That No One Will Want To Grab

You don't need to see many movies to understand that in Hollywood, once a woman hits forty, she suddenly lacks relevance. She's not sexy, she's not assertive, and if she doesn't have a man, there must be something wrong with her. Just recently, Twitter users collapsed under a Super Bowl-related aval...

Venice '11 Review: Todd Solondz's 'Dark Horse' Deconstructs Man-Child Comedies, Mostly Toothlessly

If there's one theme that's been prevalent -- nay omnipresent -- in American comedy (and some dramas) in the last half-decade or so, it's that of arrested development. The male (for they are usually male) who've been so coddled by parents, by society, by expectations, that they remain locked in a st...

New Images From 'The Hangover 2'; Justin Bartha Says Doug Isn't Lost This Time Around

Last month, a teaser trailer for the highly anticipated "The Hangover 2" arrived and announced the return of The Wolfpack, but once again, Justin Bartha's character of Doug was nowhere to be found. But there was a monkey featured very prominently (this writer thinks Doug is the monkey but no one else in The Playlist office will listen). There's still two months to go before the film hits theaters and full length trailer will likely shed some light on what's happening, but until then, these latest images from Empire (print edition, not yet online) will have to do. They also managed to speak to the cast and Bartha reveals that Doug will likely ...

    film review: Holy Rollers

A good movie starts with an idea. In the case of Holy Rollers, a news item about a drug bust involving Hasidic Jews from Brooklyn, New York inspired a novice producer to believe that this could be the springboard for a film…and he was right. Holy Rollers is a piece of fiction inspired by t...
