Tate Taylor May Melissa McCarthy's R-Rated 'Tammy'

Despite the (somewhat unfair) criticisms lobbed at "The Help," its director Tate Taylor has walked away smiling. Disney's movie powered its way to over $175 million worldwide and lest you think that number was padded out by foreign tickets, guess again -- 90% of that figure is domestic...

    Melissa McCarthy Hosts SNL

I'm traveling abroad so I can't access some of the clips that look so great, but I will put in links to sites that you can access in case you missed the show. From posts on the blogosphere it looked like she kicked butt, was fearless and the good news is the ratings were up from last week.

Melissa McCarthy Covers The Hollywood Reporter

This brings a very big smile to my face. Fresh off her Emmy win, McCarthy will host SNL this weekend. This is really her moment. But it's not like it will be downhill for her. I think she is still really on her way up and she is such a great role model for all of us who don't look the way Holly...

Melissa McCarthy Gets Some New Gigs

The Melissa McCarthy express is keeping on rolling. She has just signed up to host the 2nd episode of SNL, and she was signed on for a new film called ID Theft with Jason Bateman. The big news about this is that the film was, of course, written for two guys, but Bateman loved McCarthy and had them ...

Bridesmaids is a Big Fat Hit!

Women took up the mantle and went to see the film. The gross was about $24.5 (UPDATE - $26.2) million about $10 million more than predicted. I don't know who does the predicting on these types of films but they missed the boat on this one big time. I know they wanted to keep expectations down because the mantra was (and seems always is with a film about women) that this is unprecedented and there is nothing to compare it to. I'd like to now retire these delusional thoughts. Women have starred in successful franchises, action movies and comedies. Maybe we just need to start keeping our own statistics to help people out. (Who wants to wor...

Save the Future for Women in Comedy - See Bridesmaids

How did we get to a place in 2011 where the female Hollywood comedian is on the endangered species list? My god we have three female Supreme Court justices, we've had three female secretaries of state, we have several just as crazy as the dudes women in the running for the Republican nomination for...

    In Praise of Melissa McCarthy

I finally saw Bridesmaids last night. LOVED IT. Will have a longer piece later this week, but I wanted to single out Melissa McCarthy for a gush of love immediately. She almost stole the movie from Kristen Wiig. Almost, but not quite. I was so impressed with how they handled the different chara...

    Why Bridesmaids Matters

This feels like another cultural watershed moment for women on screen. A big studio comedy that is about women. We all know the difficulties women in comedy have faced. Gone are the days of Goldie Hawn and Madeline Kahn and Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin. Women who were allowed to be stars and all...
