Nicholas Hoult, Michael Shannon, Elle Fanning & Kodi Smit-McPhee Are 'Young Ones' For Jake Paltrow

Certainly less well-known that his much more famous sister and parents, Jake Paltrow has nonetheless been quietly making his own mark. In 2007 he delivered his feature debut "The Good Night," which admittedly didn't make much of a splash. But for his sophomore effort, he's certainl...

Michael Shannon & Samantha Morton Join 'The Harvest' For 'Wild Things' Director John McNaughton

The year was 1998, and the movie was "Wild Things." The trashy sexploitation movie wasn't exactly the best reviewed film of the year, but thanks to some girl-on-girl action, a menage a trois and enough double entendres for a singles mixer, it became a cult favorite, spawning a number o...

Michael Shannon Won't Say "Kneel Before Zod" In 'Man Of Steel' & Why Franchise Traditions Aren't Always A Good Thing

Superman brings with it a lot of baggage. With a cinematic history, and of course, an even longer one in the pages of the comics, certain segments of fans are expecting Zack Snyder's upcoming "Man Of Steel" to at least pay tribute to its predecessors in some fashion. Portions of variou...

    TIFF Capsule Review: 'The Iceman'

The historical background for "The Iceman" is the killing spree of hitman Richard Kuklinksi, a hired gun for the Gambino crime family from the fifties through the eighties, and the droll suburban existence he lived during that time with his clueless family. As Kuklinski, Michael Shannon easily fits the creepy lunatic role, but Winona Ryder's bland turn as the killer's wife epitomizes the lifeless trajectory of this cold portrait. When the movie begins, Kuklinski has already displayed his psychopathic tendencies by killing people when he's off-duty. For a while, director Ariel Vromen manages to hold some interest by fo...

Venice Review: Michael Shannon Vehicle 'The Iceman' Is A Tired Take On The Mob Flick

Are we living in a post-gangster movie age? From the early talkies to the Oscar-winning success of “The Departed,” the genre has been ever-popular and responsible for seminal films from “White Heat” and “The Godfather” to “Goodfellas” and “Pulp Fiction.” But one struggles to think of a standout film...
