"King's Speech" Leads BAFTA Awards

Tom Hooper's "The King's Speech" led the Orange British Academy Film Awards, which were handed out tonight at London’s Royal Opera House. The film took 7 honors, including best film, best original screenplay, and acting trophies for Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter. It also took best British Film, the first film to take both best film and best British film honors in decades.

Rush (who has now won 3 BAFTAs) and Carter's wins are unlikely to repeat at the Oscars, where Christian Bale and either Melissa Leo or Hailee Steinfeld are favored. But "The King's Speech" win here further cements its status as the frontrunner to win the best picture prize at the Oscars.

The "King's" sweep wasn't across the board, though. David Fincher took best director honors in the night's most surprising event (and potentially suggestive he will do the same at the Oscars), and the film lost film editing, cinematography, art direction and costume design (to "Social Network," "True Grit," "Inception" and "Alice in Wonderland," respectively).

Other major winners included Natalie Portman for best actress, "Toy Story 3" for best animated film, and "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" for best foreign language film.
