'The Artist' Sweeps Indie Spirit Awards

"The Artist"

Michel Hazanavicius's "The Artist" swept the 27th Film Independent's Spirit Awards this afternoon, taking prizes for best feature, best director, best actor and best cinematography in what is surely foreshadowing for tomorrow's Oscars.

Other major winners included "Margin Call" -- which took best first feature and the Robert Altman Award, and "The Descendants," which won best screenplay best supporting female.

Wow, what an utterly disappointing list of winners, even more disappointing than the list of nominees. Sure, there were many 'good' films released this year, but how many were actually all that interesting?

These awards are a sham. Any movie appealing to a viewer's intellect has "spirit." They need to limit the awards to true independently made films made by true unknowns and shown at festivals across the US besides Sundance.
