'Lincoln,' 'Django Unchained' Lead 2013 Golden Globe Nominations
'Lincoln'
The film -- which also led the nominations for the Critics Choice and SAG Awards earlier this week -- is quickly assuming frontrunner status in the Oscar race. It took nominations for best picture (drama), best director, best screenplay, best original score as well as acting nods for Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones.
Not far behind was the somewhat surprising nomination haul of Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," which many were writing off as a bonafide awards season contender (it was totally snubbed at the SAGs). It received 5 nominations here, including best picture, best director, best screenplay, and acting nods for both Leonardo DiCaprio and Christoph Waltz in the supporting actor category.

"Django" and "Lincoln" were joined by Ang Lee's "Life of Pi," Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" and Ben Affleck's "Argo" (which tied "Django" with 5 nods) in the best picture (drama) category. The directors of all five films made up the best director category, which snubbed the best picture (comedy/musical) contenders altogether, most notably Tom Hooper ("Les Miserables") and David O. Russell ("Silver Linings Playbook").
"Les Miserables" and "Silver Linings" each recieved four nominations despite their director category snubs, including acting mentions for Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway ("Les Mis") and Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence ("Silver Linings"). However, in perhaps the most glaring omission of the announcement, "Silver Linings" supporting actor Robert DeNiro was left off the list in favor of Alan Arkin, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and the aforementioned "Django" boys.
Other major acting snubs included Matthew McConaughey ("Magic Mike"), Emmanuelle Riva ("Amour"), Quvenzhané Wallis ("Beasts of the Southern Wild"), Maggie Smith ("The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"), Anthony Hopkins ("Hitchcock") and Javier Bardem ("Skyfall"). Of those, only Smith and Bardem received SAG nominations, making it an uphill battle to an Oscar nod for the other four (though most years one or two actors manage to get an Oscar nomination without SAG or Globe mentions beforehand. As for surprising inclusions, Nicole Kidman continued her very unexpected path to a possible Oscar bid for Lee Daniels' "The Paperboy." After coming out of nowhere to receive a nomination at the SAGs yesterday, Kidman nabbed a Globe mention as well (alongside a TV nom for "Hemmingway & Gellhorn" and a nod for her husband Keith Urban in best original song), suggesting the Academy could very well follow suit.
The Academy is unlikely to follow suit, however, with the bizarre domination of "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" at the Globes. Certainly no one predicted its acting nominations for Ewan McGregor or Emily Blunt, or its nod for best picture (comedy/musical). "Salmon Fishing" ended up with just as many nominations as Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master."
The Golden Globes -- hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (both nominees in the TV categories) -- will go down January 13, 2013.

Some big surprises in the list - no Tom Hooper for Best Director of LES MISERABLES, which was also snubbed in the Best Screenplay category. I think this is the point at which LES MISERABLES has lost the Best Picture race at the Oscars. Three nominations for SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN - and here was me thinking I was the only person who liked it. Thrilled that Helen Mirren is up for HITCHCOCK and an Oscar nomination is looking increasingly likely.

Three of five best foreign films are French language. Maybe it's better for Screenplay to be devided into Original or Adapted. Anyway David O. Russell does deserve it, or Chris Terrio. Salmon Fishing In The Yemen didn't get the quantity of attention which is shown from this list. Bit weird to have to mixed with cool indie films and big budget commercials together. Much more prefer Independent Spirit Awards.
