'Lincoln' Leads 2013 Oscar Nominations; Bigelow Snubbed

The nominations for the 85th Academy Awards have been announced, and Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" leads the way with 12 nominations, including nods for best picture, best director and Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones for acting.

"Lincoln" was joined by 8 other films in the best picture race: Michael Haneke's "Amour," Ben Affleck's "Argo," Benh Zeitlin's "Beasts of the Southern Wild," Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," Tom Hooper's "Les Miserables," Ang Lee's "Life of Pi," David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook" and Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty." The most notable snubs in the category were "Moonrise Kingdom," "Skyfall" and "The Master," though none are huge surprises.

The huge surprises came in the best director category, where Bigelow, Affleck and Hooper -- all DGA nominees -- were passed over in favor of Haneke, Russell and, most shockingly, Zeitlin.

The acting races show quite a few notable nominees (and non-nominees) as well. John Hawkes, Marion Cotillard, Helen Mirren, Javier Bardem, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman, Maggie Smith and Judi Dench are among those that had reasonable chances of making Oscar's list but were ultimately left off, while Jacki Weaver, Amy Adams, Joaquin Phoenix, Christoph Waltz, Emmanuelle Riva and Quvenzhané Wallis made it despite not having a single SAG nomination among them. Also of note: All but three actors nominated are former nominees (Bradley Cooper, Riva and Wallis -- the latter two being the oldest and youngest nominees in their category ever, respectively), while 9 of 20 have already won (including 3 two-timers).

    Hugh Jackman is also receiving his first nomination, along with Cooper, Wallis & Riva.

    Best Directing was definitely the most shocking of all announced yesterday. You can even hear the gasps of disbelief among the audience in the studio. Kathryn Bigelow & Ben Affleck (whom many had thought to be locks) should have been nominated instead, while Quentin Tarantino had a very strong case.
    No offence to Ben Zeitlin, but I think he came out of nowhere to snatch a nomination. And I don't think his name would have been mentioned as a strong contender by most observers.
    Nonetheless, there is no denying all the 5 listed nominees are accomplished filmmakers so congrats to them.
    Michael Haneke won Palme d'Or and now an Oscar nomination with 'Amour', a pinnacle moment to his career; while Ang Lee and David O Russell's nominations had been widely expected.
    I feel there is not much stopping Spielberg from winning now though.

    This year's nominations proved to be eclectic and quite contrasting to say the least. I'm glad the Academy voter's recognized an opportunity to commemorate smaller features for once (Ex. Drive Snub). Overall the choices are def. worthy of their recognition. Sad to see directorial snubs for Bigelow, Affleck, and both Andersons!) I'm predicting Phoenix for a Best Actor win, Riva for actress, Jones or Hoffman for Supporting actor, Hathaway for support. actress respectfully, and lastly Lee for Picture/Director (He's definitely an overdue recipient for Best Picture). Although I could be wrong and indeed Lincoln will sweep every major category haha!

    GASP! a Denis Lavant snub is PREPOSTEROUS! (Can you say Fassbender again).

    Really surprised PTA didnt at least get an original screenplay nom. Bigalows snub sortof makes sense but PTAs annoys me to no end. Also, i think they have something against leo, how he didnt at least get a nomination is beyond me.

    John Hawkes definitely should be nominated. They really gave the indie representive Beasts of the Southern Wild a big face. But by all means the Academy never finds a real balance, just dominates the shallow mainstream, so it's just boring. Needless to say they always miss out something valuable for real potentially on purpose.

    Doesn't the Bigelow snub just show that the academy has problems nominating female directors. It's bullshit. It's some of the best direction of the year and better than her deserving win for the Hurt Locker.

    Oh my, I feel so happy and relieved. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the Best Director nominations and noticed Bigelow was nowhere to be found. This is a miracle. I haven't been this happy in quite some time.
