2013 Oscar Predictions: Best Animated Feature

"Brave"
Indiewire will provide regular updates of our predictions for the 85th Academy Awards through February 24th, when the winners are announced.

Here's our take on the best animated feature category, which for once is quite the race. After years and years of assumed winners, a trio of Disney titles -- "Frankenweenie," "Brave"and "Wreck-It-Ralph" -- are all feasible winners. "Brave" won the Globe and "Ralph" won the PGA abd the Annie, but perhaps the idea of finally giving Tim Burton an Oscar will give "Frankenweenie" an edge? Or perhaps not.

Nominees and predictions below. Check out all predictions in all the categories here, and this list of all the Oscar-nominated films available ON DEMAND right now.

The nominees:
"Brave" Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman
"Frankenweenie" Tim Burton
"ParaNorman" Sam Fell and Chris Butler
"The Pirates! Band of Misfits" Peter Lord
"Wreck-It Ralph" Rich Moore

Will win: "Frankenweenie"
Could win: "Wreck-It-Ralph"
Should win: ""Frankenweenie," but this is a very strong lineup.

I'd say Wreck-It Ralph because it won PGA and Annie.

  • ^_^ | Thu Feb 07 04:59:27 EST 2013

but remember.... HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON won the ANNIE but TOY STORY 3 won the OSCARS :-)

  • ^_^ | Sun Feb 03 02:43:52 EST 2013Reply

    for me..
    will win: FRANKENWEENIE
could win: WRECK-IT RALPH or PARANORMAN
    should win: FRANKENWEENIE
should be on the list: RISE OF THE GUARDIANS and LE TABLEAU(the painting) replacing PIRATES and BRAVE :-)

  • JD | Sat Feb 02 11:30:37 EST 2013Reply

Frankenweenie has an outside chance of winning, but the front-runner is Wreck-it Ralph, and it deserves it. However, you should never count Pixar out. Brave also has a good chance of winning it. All three of those films are Oscar-worthy; Disney made a marketing mistake by releasing three amazing animated films in one year

  • Aveeva | Fri Feb 01 22:59:39 EST 2013Reply

It's a really tough field. It's unlikely that the non-disney films will win. I'd really like to see Frankenweenie get it as Tim Burton really deserves it, on the other hand I really enjoyed Wreck-it Ralph heaps and I want Disney Animation to finally get an animation oscar. Brave was great but doesn't deserve the oscar.

  • DEEa | Fri Feb 01 11:51:09 EST 2013Reply

Brave will winn! it's the best!

  • Gregory | Wed Jan 23 16:28:42 EST 2013Reply

I just can’t get behind a movie where the Heroine knowingly poisons her mother. I am pulling for ParaNorman and Wreck-it Ralph

  • HEY | Wed Jan 23 01:57:20 EST 2013Reply

WHY RISE OF THE GUARDIANS WAS NOT NOMINATED??????? IT IS MUCH BETTER THAN PIRATES AND BRAVE AND I THINK THE PAINTING ALSO SHOULD BE THERE .... BUT BECAUSE THEY WAS NOT NOMINATED... I HOPE FRANKENWEENIE WILL WIN :-)

  • Hannah | Tue Jan 22 10:46:14 EST 2013Reply

I REALLY hope "Frankenweenie" wins it (the picture deserves it by a mile... + the Burton factor. I meam, c'mon!!! How in the world did "Corpse Bride" lose in 2005 over "Wallace & Gromit"?? I'm still asking that myself. What a snub!!).

  • Sadie | Mon Jan 21 19:41:48 EST 2013Reply

Frankenweenie could win, and I really hope it does. I think the homage to classic horror films could work well with the Academy's older members. It IS a Burton jewel. And considering that Burton is overdue, they could give him an Oscar for this. But you're right, it's a strong line up and hard to make up my mind. Wreck it Ralph could win too. But based solely on number of accolades, my money is on ParaNorman. The only movie I don't really see winning is Pirates.

  • CAMERON | Thu Jan 17 20:35:34 EST 2013Reply

At frinzee.com, paranorman is in the no.1 followed by the pirates, brave, wreck it ralph lastly frankenweenie... let's vote at frinzee for our best animated feature 2013... let's do battle here and won.

  • Jason | Sun Jan 13 17:14:22 EST 2013Reply

I think Wreck-It Ralph should win, since it's the best animated film of the year.

  • Hannah | Sat Jan 12 11:45:32 EST 2013Reply

Agree 100% with you about "Frankenweenie". It's not only the best animated film of the year, but also a "Tim Burton jewel". It's hard to believe the Academy is going to deny Burton an Oscar for much more time (and after so many decades and so many great and unique pieces such as "Edward Scissorhands", "Big Fish", "Corpse Bride"...) he may be a freak, but I have the feeling that the Academy thinks it's his time finally for the Oscar.

  • ^_^ | Thu Jan 10 04:31:56 EST 2013Reply

I THINK THERE WILL BE 1 OR 2 ANIMATED FILM THAT IS NOT A 3D ANIMATION THAT WILL BE NOMINATE FOR THE BEST ANIMATED FILM AND IF IT WILL HAPPEN A HOPE THE NOMINEES WILL BE : 1.FRANKENWEENIE 2. LE TABLEAU(THE PAINTING) 3.PARANORMAN 4.WRECK-IT RALPH 5. RISE OF THE GUARDIANS :-)

  • Jason | Wed Jan 09 20:59:19 EST 2013Reply

In order from who I want to win.

    1. Wreck-It-Ralph
    2. Frankenweenie
    3. Brave
    4. Rise of the Guardians
    5. ParaNorman

I wish "The Secret World of Arrietty" was eligible, and that "The Pirates! In An Adventure with Scientists" had a good chance of being nominated.

  • Tom | Tue Jan 08 17:19:46 EST 2013Reply

Brave? If that wins an Oscar then the bar has been set way too low.

  • Tim | Mon Jan 21 22:20:27 EST 2013

I guess it takes one film starring a female protagonist to convince everyone that Pixar doesn't make the best movies in the industry anymore. Took everyone long enough. You think everyone would get it after Cars.

  • Selenator | Wed Jan 09 09:15:53 EST 2013

I agree, if it wins it will be a disgrace. It was Pixar's worst along with Cars 1 & 2.

  • CJ | Tue Jan 08 00:59:17 EST 2013Reply

I know it probably won't happen but HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA!! If not- Wreck it Ralph or Brave. Frankenweenie definitely has a shot too - Tim Burton just creeps me out! :D

  • Emmanuel Pader | Mon Jan 07 23:32:27 EST 2013Reply

I predicted this since October Last year and I'm still thinking these today on the five animated features that will be the Official Nominees of the Oscars 2013 Animated Feature(Brave, Frankenweenie, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians & Wreck-it Ralph). If it does wow.. I'm planning to buy these titles on DVD!!! But for Now You made a good decision on the Nominees the only question now is who will be the winner. For me it's OK to be nominated but when you're winner you deserve it!!

  • ^_^ | Mon Jan 07 03:59:53 EST 2013Reply

IF I LOOK AT THE ANIMATION.......... RISE OF THE GUARDIANS and WRECK-IT RALPH ARE THE BEST ....BUT IF I LOOK AT THE STORY........FRANKENWEENIE DESERVES TO WIN THE BEST IN ANIMATED FILM... AND I ALSO HOPING RISE OF THE GUARDIANS FOR THE BEST ORIGINAL SCORE ^_^

  • Anna Evans | Sun Jan 06 03:40:27 EST 2013Reply

I really love Wreck-It Ralph. I loved everything about it. It was not only creative, but it brought a sense of imagination to me. Now I think all of my video games at my local arcade socialize in their own Game Central Station, :)

I really do hope it wins! It was so amazing, :)

  • BlueFox94 | Sat Jan 05 14:13:25 EST 2013Reply

Go "WRECK-IT RALPH"! I pray that it wins the Oscar for Best Animated Feature! :D

  • Kaya | Wed Jan 02 16:02:27 EST 2013Reply

I think Frankenweenie has a better shot at winning the Oscar because it's been considered as the highest reviewed animated film of the year. As mush as I did enjoyed Brave, Wreck-it Ralph, ParaNorman, and Rise of the Guardians, I think Frankenweenie has a better chance to win the Oscar.

  • Evan | Tue Jan 01 14:09:26 EST 2013Reply

Frankenweenie is so beautiful and Tim Burton merites an Oscar

  • SELENATOR | Fri Dec 28 11:48:28 EST 2012Reply

Finaly I've seen them all!! My number one is "Frankenweenie". "Rise of the Guardians" and "Wreck It Ralph!" come right behind (but in no particular order, I like them both the same way). I have the impression that even if "Frankenweenie" is the best of the lot, "Wreck It Ralph!" is going to win the Oscar because it performed better at the box office... and is a more "good feeling" movie than "Frankenweenie". That's sad because the Tim Burton masterpiece deserves it more.

  • Pianoman | Thu Dec 27 16:37:25 EST 2012Reply

Rise of the Guardians and Wreck It Ralph should both get nominated. They were both amazing movies.

  • Cindy | Sat Dec 22 21:34:41 EST 2012Reply

I think Rise of the Guardians should be in the five that gets nominated. The animation was absolutely flawless, don't even get me started. The creators put in so much detail into the little things like the sand from the Sandman, the frost on Jack's staff and hoodie, Tooth's feathers, just flawless. Also, it has a great story behind it and gives a good moral to the kids. The movie is great for the kids, older people can enjoy it too. It had humor, great characters and villain, just perfect.

  • Joah | Thu Dec 13 20:58:00 EST 2012Reply

I hated Brave and Paranorman. I would love to see Pirates, Wreck-it Ralph, Lorax, Madagascar 3, or Hotel Transylvania get nominated. Everyone says that Brave should win, but I thought it was boring. It probably will win though, simply because it's made by Pixar, which the academy worships.

  • Selenator | Tue Dec 11 18:22:56 EST 2012Reply

I have yet to see "Wreck-It-Ralph", "Paranorman" and "Rise of the Guardians". Considering the rest... I think the list is spot on... but I would have put "Frankenweenie" over "Brave" (I was sooooo dissapointed with that film, even "Tangled" was better!!!!).

  • WHA? | Sat Dec 08 16:02:46 EST 2012Reply

although i did not see it, i remember The Secret World of Arrietty getting great reviews. why is it not on the list?

  • Sleepwalker | Tue Dec 11 21:54:31 EST 2012

Arrietty came out in the US in 2012, I remember seeing it with my fiance for Valentine's day this past year.

As far as Brave goes, it wasn't as good. Arrietty was better animated and Wreck-It Ralph had a more appealing story.

  • ^_^ | Mon Dec 10 02:07:19 EST 2012

Because the Secret World of Arriety was release in 2010.

  • ^_^ | Thu Dec 06 00:42:38 EST 2012Reply

i have done watching FRANKENWEENIE and it is a GREAT FILM by TIM BURTON and it is THE BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM that I've ever seen (together with FINDING NEMO ^_^) and i i hope FRANKENWEENIE WILL WIN THE BEST AND ANIMATED FEATURE FILM AND ALSO THE BEST PICTURE ^_^

    my TOP 5:

    1. FRANKENWEENIE
    2. RISE OF THE GUARDIANS
    3. WRECK-IT RALPH
    4. LE TABLEAU( THE PAINTING)
    5. BRAVE or FROM UP ON POPPY HILL

  • Joe | Wed Nov 28 09:30:38 EST 2012Reply

I actually think there might only be three this year, there wasn't really tons of great animated movies.

    If there is three
    1.Wreck it Ralph
    2.ParaNorman
    3.Brave (simply because it's Pixar)

4 and 5 could easily be Frankenweenie, Pirates, and Rise of the Guardiand

  • Jon | Thu Nov 29 20:52:59 EST 2012

No, the rule is if more than 15 films are submitted, they're will be 5 nominees. They only have 3 nominees if there is less than 16 films submitted.

  • Moon | Wed Nov 28 08:31:32 EST 2012Reply

I think that ParaNorman or Pirates should get a better shot for a nomination for the sheer quality of these films. Brave though is a Pixar staple. ROTG and Hotel Transylvania must fall to the longer shots.

  • Gio | Sun Nov 18 01:07:18 EST 2012Reply

Frankenweene ftw. Seriously. Brave was good but it was lowbar for a Pixar movie.

  • BOO | Tue Nov 13 22:41:59 EST 2012Reply

So far Rise of The Guardians is getting meh reviews.

What about Arjun the warrior prince? Had seen that on many predictions.

  • Mirko | Sun Sep 30 13:09:08 EDT 2012Reply

    Brave.

  • fff | Thu Sep 27 12:15:10 EDT 2012Reply

Why is The Pirates so low?

I mean Wallace & Gromit WON an Oscar.

  • Jake | Mon Nov 05 22:22:33 EST 2012

Wallace & Gromit was quite a bit better.

  • jez | Mon Oct 08 09:30:23 EDT 2012

I wondered that as well. Aardman is currently 1 : 1 in this category.

  • BOO | Tue Sep 25 17:45:32 EDT 2012Reply

I heard Frankenweenie was really good. It seems safe to say that it's got better chances than Brave.

  • boo | Fri Aug 31 11:03:29 EDT 2012Reply

What about The Secret World of Arrietty?

  • Oli | Fri Nov 09 09:51:16 EST 2012

Released two years ago? UK release was July 2011

  • Maxim | Thu Aug 30 13:01:23 EDT 2012Reply

I am, frankly, stunned by such a low perceived rankign of Wreck-It-Ralph. That looks like a huge cross-over hit to me and is likely to be well respected.

  • Will | Wed Nov 21 14:32:21 EST 2012

Uh, US Release 2012? Oscars go by US release of films

  • Jeff Kemp | Wed Aug 29 19:05:32 EDT 2012Reply

Pirates got great reviews and should probably be higher up.
Wreck-it Ralph looks like a Despicable Me rip-off but could still be well perceived by audiences.
Surprised ROTG is number one for you given how little is known about it.

  • oli | Fri Nov 09 09:52:44 EST 2012

How does WIR look like a Despicable Me rip off? Are you sure you've seen DM, WIR (trailer) and read the synopsis for both films?
