2013 Oscar Predictions: Best Film Editing

Ben Affleck's 'Argo'
Indiewire will provide regular updates of our predictions for the 85th Academy Awards through February 24th, when the winners are announced.

Here's our take on best film editing, which could go many ways. William Goldbenberg is a double nominee in the category, and there's a very good chance he'll win -- more likely for "Argo" but also potentially for co-editing "Zero Dark Thirty" (the most deserving winner and potentially the film's best shot at a trophy). Though "Lincoln" and "Life of Pi" could very well win as well.

Nominees and predictions below. Check out all predictions in all the categories here, and this list of all the Oscar-nominated films available ON DEMAND right now.

The nominees:
"Argo" William Goldenberg
"Life of Pi" Tim Squyres
"Lincoln" Michael Kahn
"Silver Linings Playbook" Jay Cassidy and Crispin Struthers
"Zero Dark Thirty" Dylan Tichenor and William Goldenberg

Will win: "Argo"
Could win: Anything but "Silver Linings Playbook"
Should win: "Zero Dark Thirty"

The hobbit was edited wonderfully. Everyone is being rather horrid to Peter and the team. I watched most of the movies and i think that the hobbit deserves a nomination at the very least.

Put ZDT above Lincoln at least. It might win. Argo had great editing anyway so I don't care either way.

Argo, The Dark Knight Rises, Lincoln, or Zero Dark Thirty

I enjoyed The Dark Knight Rises but the editing was not good.

Hmm ... Cloud Atlas is the best edited movie I've ever seen. The entire movie depends on the editing. Putting it 14th is like putting Avatar 14th for Visual Effects.

Yes Cloud Atlas had a lot of editing. Any film that is almost 3 hours usually does. But what Cloud Atlas has done, and has done wonderfully, is put together 6 different stories as one movie. The pacing was great as it switched from story to story. Editing is one of the most crucial parts of filmmaking and that was one of Cloud Atlas's best achievements. So my vote would be for Cloud Atlas to be at least nominated and possibly win.

Cloud Atlas just had a lot of editing. Doesn't mean it's the best. Since it was so flawed it's hard to see how the editing was strategetic so that's why ta low. Argo had great editing and deserves this Oscar if nothing else

This could go any of which way. My best guess thus far is THE MASTER and ARGO.
