2013 Oscar Predictions: Best Sound Mixing

Indiewire will provide regular updates of our predictions for the 85th Academy Awards through February 24th, when the winners are announced.

Here's our take on best sound mixing, which looks like a showdown between James Bond and "Les Mis." We give the slight edge to the latter, though hope the former might win anyway and give Greg P. Russell his first Oscar after 16 nominations.

Nominees and predictions below. Check out all predictions in all the categories here, and this list of all the Oscar-nominated films available ON DEMAND right now.

The nominees:
"Argo"
John Reitz, Gregg Rudloff and Jose Antonio Garcia
"Les Misérables"
Andy Nelson, Mark Paterson and Simon Hayes
"Life of Pi"
Ron Bartlett, D.M. Hemphill and Drew Kunin
"Lincoln"
Andy Nelson, Gary Rydstrom and Ronald Judkins
"Skyfall"
Scott Millan, Greg P. Russell and Stuart Wilson

Will win: "Les Miserables"
Could win: "Skyfall"
Should win: "Skyfall"

    3. Christopher Boyes, Michael Hedges, Tony Johnson, Michael Seminick & Chris Hiles, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey"
    4. Ron Bartlett, D.M. Hemphill & Drew Kunin, "Life of Pi" *(WINNER)

I wouldn't be surprised if Pi won 1 or both of the sound awards just because last year they gave it to the most technically advanced movie: Hugo. Other than that, I think Skyfall has a shot at both as well.

Pi was the best mix by far. They had to mix a film that was almost entirely done with CGI and did a wonderful job. Also they mixed the film in Dolby Atmos which is a new format that no one else has ever used.

again ... if you read the nominees, you'll see who the possible contenders are ... and The Avengers isn't one of them.

I think the top 5 predicted here (Skfall, TDKR, ZDT, Les Mis, Pi) will be what we see at the Oscars. And I think the winner will come down to Skyfall and The Dark Knight. But the Skyfall was by far the best. I do think the Avengers could easily swoop in here and take a nom from Les Mis but I doubt any other film will wiggle in there.

The Dark Knight Rises, Zero Dark Thirty, Skyfall, and The Avengers
