2014 Oscar Predictions: Best Costume Design

Indiewire will provide regular updates of our predictions for the 86th Academy Awards through March 2nd, when the winners are announced.

This is a definite opportunity to give a prize to "American Hustle" (in some scenarios, it's only prize -- though that's probably unlikely), so we say it has the edge though both "12 Years a Slave" and "The Great Gatsby" are formidable opponents.

Nominees and predictions below. Check out all predictions in all the categories here.

The nominees:
“American Hustle” Michael Wilkinson
“The Grandmaster” William Chang Suk Ping
“The Great Gatsby” Catherine Martin
“The Invisible Woman” Michael O’Connor
“12 Years a Slave” Patricia Norris

Will win: “American Hustle” Michael Wilkinson
Could win: “The Great Gatsby” Catherine Martin
Should win: “12 Years a Slave” Patricia Norris
Shoulda been here: "Inside Llewyn Davis"

Those were costumes in American Hustle? It seemed like cheap 99 cent clothing to me.

No competition here: The Great Gatsby....All-The-Way!!!

Why is Catching Fire not going to be nominated? Its costume design is awesome!

    My Nominations (Best Costume Design):
Catherine Martin - THE GREAT GATSBY (I haven't seen the film yet, but from the trailers and clips I've seen, the costumes look outstanding and they fit the time period the movie's set in very well.)
    Janty Yates - THE COUNSELOR
    Michael Wilkinson - AMERICAN HUSTLE
Wendy Partridge - THOR: THE DARK WORLD

    I repeat: Saving Mr Banks.

Catching Fire SHOULD be nominated for this award and really it should win. But it probably won't even be nominated.

The Great Gatsby totally deserves this Oscar. They nailed the fashion of the times flawlessly while also making some touches that we in the twenty-first century can appreciate. But if that's not to be, then Catching Fire.

Another win for The Great Gatsby I'm afraid. My guess for other nominees: 12 Years a Slave, Inside Llewyn Davis, The Hobbit and The Invisible Woman

  • Mirko | December 13, 2013 2:07 PMReply

I hope in Daniel Orlandi for Saving Mr Banks.

  • John Kreczko | December 4, 2013 12:03 PMReply

Catching Fire for a nomination at least.

  • JD | December 2, 2013 7:50 PMReply

What was so good about the costumes in The Great Gatsby? They simply dressed the same way that people did in the 20s. How is that Oscar worthy?

    *face palm*

  • T | November 30, 2013 5:27 PMReply

The Great Gatsby and Catching Fire should be definite nominations.

  • Shawnelle | November 29, 2013 5:56 AMReply

Your missing a really important film here ! The hunger Games : Catching fire ; their costume designer has even won an Oscar , I can't imagine her not being nominated at least !

  • Austin | November 28, 2013 1:19 PMReply

    What about Catching Fire?

  • Techraan | November 16, 2013 10:14 PMReply

Ridiculous. Man of Steel isn't even in the running. It's the Blade Runner jilt all over again. Stop giving Best Costume Design to movies that USE RENTALS!!! DERP!!!

  • The Brady Critic | October 14, 2013 1:11 PMReply

Who will win: the great Gatsby

    might win: saving Mr. banks

should win: OZ great and powerful/ the hobbit 2

  • Brett | September 26, 2013 5:14 PMReply

    Man of Steel?

  • Giambon | September 22, 2013 5:26 PMReply

I agree with Mirko: Thomas Newman can to win the Oscar this year. Saving Mr Banks can to have already an sure Oscar, that of Original score.

  • Mirko | September 18, 2013 11:16 AMReply

I think in nomination Daniel Orlandi for Saving Mr Banks. But I predict victory of Thomas Newman in category original score.

  • Brett | September 17, 2013 5:14 PMReply

Even though I have no interest in seeing Thor 2, I think that should be on the list

  • Sym | September 16, 2013 5:46 AMReply

Don't forget The Hunger Games Catching Fire!
