2014 Oscar Predictions: Best Makeup & Hairstyling

Indiewire will provide regular updates of our predictions for the 86th Academy Awards through March 2nd, when the winners are announced.

"Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa," Oscar winner? That's what were betting on for now, even if it makes sense for the only major contender generally -- "Dallas Buyers Club" -- to pick up a prize here. Its just that the makeup & hairstyling in "Dallas Buyers" really isn't as impressive as "Bad Grandpa" and the other nominee, "The Lone Ranger."

Nominees and predictions below. Check out all predictions in all the categories here.

The nominees:
“Dallas Buyers Club” Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews
“Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa” Stephen Prouty
“The Lone Ranger” Joel Harlow and Gloria Pasqua-Casny

Will win: “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa” Stephen Prouty
Could win: “Dallas Buyers Club” Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews
Should win: : “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa” Stephen Prouty
Shoulda been here: "American Hustle"

The Lone Ranger could even win. They obviously don't give a shit about the poor quality of the movie in general, since it was nominated in 2 categories. I don't understand why Dallas Buyers Club is here. Is it because they put makeup on a man?

  • Burt | February 24, 2014 2:18 PM

No not because it was a man. Because Robin Mathews, who is the nominee, had a 250$ budget for the whole production. Also the filming is not in screenplay order. Which means she had to make the two actors look healthy or sick, switching those two even a couple times a day. But most importantly she's done a wonderful job.

American Hustle should've gotten a nod solely for Christian Bale's horrendously beautifully comb over and Bradley Cooper's disgustingly amazing perm.

My Nominations (Best Makeup & Hairstyling):

  • Alec | January 11, 2014 7:25 PMReply

Bad Grandpa will defiantly win because the makeup was amazing. And yes...Jackass could be nominated for something!

  • Omer | January 10, 2014 5:11 AMReply

    why not desolation of smaug??

  • Martina | January 2, 2014 7:04 PMReply

I think Jackass have to be nominated because it made a good fake grandpa. Now this is my list:
    1. American Hustle
    2. The Lone Ranger
    3. Jackass
    4. Catching Fire
    5. The Great Gatsby
    6. Rush
    7. Dallas Buyers Club
    8. Desolation of Smaug (the same makeup of An Unexpected Journey)
    9. Hansel & Gretel
    10. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

  • Bey | January 1, 2014 12:56 PMReply

American hustle,The hunger games: catching fire and the great gatsby!

  • Erik393 | December 31, 2013 2:30 AMReply

I'm sorry but what the "F" are the academy voters thinking. Again with the Lone Ranger crap. And Bad Granda.... what a joke. For The Hobbit (2) to not get a nomination is messed up. But you're right Academy. Have the films with the easiest hair and makeup get the nominations. I remember the days when films like Narnia, Lord of the Rings, Passion of the Christ and certain horror films were nominated because they were the best and most difficult to pull off. I guess the voters decided to skip the Evil Dead remake, which had the best makeup this year hands down (next to the Hobbit)

  • lorna | December 29, 2013 4:27 PMReply

    1. The Lone Ranger: a faultless makeup. A makeup that you can do on your own.
    2. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa: it looks like a real oldman.
    3. Catching Fire: futurist makeup from the Capitol. Enobaria's teeth. Effie's wigs. Sores made by the poisoned fog.
    4. American Hustle: period film makeup and hairstyling. Christian Bale looks fat and ugly.
    5. Dallas Buyers Club: Jared Leto transformation.
    6. The Great Gatsby: period film hairstyling.
    7. Hansel & Gretel: Spooky monsters.

  • lorna | December 29, 2013 4:16 PMReply

    1. The Lone Ranger
    2. Jackass: Bad Grandpa
    3. Catching Fire
    4. American Hustle
    5. Dallas Buyers Club
    6. The Great Gasby
    7. Hansel & Gretel

  • FilmFan | December 29, 2013 1:20 AMReply

American hustle come on the hair.

  • Brett | December 19, 2013 5:12 PMReply

I can't believe people are predicting that a JACKASS movie could get nominated for something

  • Bard | December 19, 2013 7:28 AMReply

I think The Lone Ranger, American Hustle, The Hunger Games and Dallas Buyers Club will get nominated and that The Great Gatsby will win this one.

  • Sym | December 16, 2013 1:08 AMReply

I'm actually not surprised Catching Fire made the list. It had some AWESOME makeup and hair. Wouldn't be surprised if it got nominated for costumes as well.

  • Stan Robinson | December 14, 2013 8:38 PMReply

  • Stan Robinson | December 12, 2013 11:46 AMReply

Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters is a strong makeup movie. The movie came out early n the year and wasn't "popular" but the prosthetic work on the witches and EDWARD the troll are outstanding and deserve a nod.

  • BOO | December 9, 2013 9:54 PMReply

Catching Fire should definitely be on here and I don't know why it isn't getting more hype in this and costumes but I do think it might not make it for no reason.

  • Heston | December 9, 2013 8:51 AMReply

Seriously , why isn't catching fire in this list ? Someone please explain this ! It doesn't make sense.

  • JD | December 2, 2013 7:55 PMReply

While the movie looks awful, the makeup in "Bad Grandpa" looks amazing. I still have a hard time believing that he's 40 and not 80.

  • Sam | December 1, 2013 10:56 PMReply

If The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug doesn't win it would just be ridiculous. Part One was already ripped off last year when it undeservedly lost to "Les Miserables".

  • Justin | November 29, 2013 6:03 AMReply

Why don't I see catching fire in this list ? They're definitely a possible winner !

  • The Brady Critic | October 14, 2013 1:14 PMReply

    Will win: the hobbit 2

    might win: the butler

    should win: the hobbit 2

  • j david | October 5, 2013 10:06 PMReply

Twelve Years a Slave ,Prisoners and Rush should be contenders for makeup

  • james andrew | October 1, 2013 10:34 AMReply

watch for Prisoners to get some notice for make up

  • Brett | October 30, 2013 5:04 PM

Only on Melissa Leo but that's just about it
