The tent Santa Monica is up and rain-proofed as the 29th Independent Spirit Awards get underway. "12 Years a Slave" seems like the favorite, but we'll find out soon enough whether that ends up being the case.

Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" dominated the 2014 Independent Spirit Awards, taking trophies for best picture, best director, best screenplay, best cinematography and best supporting actress for Lupita Nyong'o.

Nyong'o was joined by three other acting winners all likely to repeat at tomorrow's Oscars: Cate Blanchett ("Blue Jasmine"), Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto ("Dallas Buyers Club"). It could make for the very first time all four winners at the Spirits and Oscars lined up.

Other winners included "Nebraska" for best first screenplay, "Fruitvale Station" for best first feature, "Blue is the Warmest Color" for best international feature and "20 Feet From Stardom" for best documentary. "Inside Llewyn Davis," "All Is Lost" and "Frances Ha" -- all nominated for best feature -- each went home emptyhanded.
