20 Films To Contend For Animated Feature Oscar

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has released a list of the twenty films that have submitted themselves for consideration for this year's Best Animated Feature Oscar. The unusually high number means that for the second time in the award's history (and the first time since 2002), five films will be nominated for the award. This news should please the many folks who felt this year's impressive batch of animated features deserved more than three shots at a nomination.

The twenty submitted films are:

"Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel"
"Astro Boy"
"Battle for Terra"
"Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs"
"Coraline"
"Disney's A Christmas Carol"
"The Dolphin - Story of a Dreamer"
"Fantastic Mr. Fox"
"Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs"
"Mary and Max"
"The Missing Lynx"
"Monsters vs. Aliens"
"9"
"Planet 51"
"Ponyo"
"The Princess and the Frog"
"The Secret of Kells"
"Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure"
"A Town Called Panic"
"Up"

As the Academy noted, "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," "The Dolphin - Story of a Dreamer," "Fantastic Mr. Fox," "Planet 51," "The Princess and the Frog," "The Secret of Kells" and "A Town Called Panic" have not yet had their required Los Angeles qualifying run. Submitted features must fulfill the theatrical release requirements and meet all of the category's other qualifying rules before they can advance in the voting process.

Previous winners of the award, now in its ninth year, include "Shrek," "Spirited Away," "Finding Nemo," and last year's "WALL-E."

The 82nd Academy Award nominations will be announced February 2, 2010.

I have to say that anyone who knows anything about animation or cares about the medium's future will be voting for one of these films: The Secret Of Kells Coraline The Princess and the Frog Ponyo Up I haven't seen Mary and Max yet nor have I seen A Town Called Panic. Make your vote count.

Ever since I found out about a Disney crew pushing lemmings over a cliff I can't stand any mention of them. Hated "Hook" and the original Tinkerbell had a body drawn from Marilyn Monroe's. So I am loyal to the old gal. And then there's Eisner. Don't take me there.
