310 Films from 60 Countries Head to Rio

The 11th annual Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival (Festival do Rio) kicks off today with a program of 310 films from 60 countries to screen between now and October 8. The festival opens with Ang Lee’s “Taking Woodstock.” The opening night guest of honor will be French actress Jeanne Moreau who will also be opening Rio’s “Focus on France” series, which celebrates a year of French cultural activity in Brazil. The festival will close with the Brazilian premiere of Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds.” Among the international films screening in the World Panorama section are Claire Denis’ “White Material,” Michael Haneke’s “The White Ribbon,” Werner Herzog’s “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,” Alain Resnais’ “Wild Grass,” and Catherine Breillat’s “Bluebeard.” The festival will also feature a tribute to actress Isabelle Huppert, an LGBT section called “Gay World,” and midnight screenings of films. Screening in Première Brasil, the festival’s competitive section that spotlights contemporary Brazilian films, are eleven feature films, six feature length documentaries and sixteen shorts.
