46 Scripts Make First Cut At Austin Contest
by Mary Sampson
The Austin Film Festival's Heart of Film Screenwriting Competition
received more than 3200 screenplays for consideration in its 3rd year.
From these, 46 have been declared semi-finalists. They now move on to
the festival's panel of judges who will decide which become finalists
(announced later this month). The winners will be announced on October
3rd. One script from both the family and adult category will receive
$3,500 in cash along with an all expense paid trip to the conference.
Billing itself as the first film festival "dedicated to recognizing the
writer's contribution to the film industry", Austin has become a popular
conference for aspiring screenwriters. The festival will host 46 panels,
70 films, and a long list of notable attendees including Oliver Stone
("Platoon," "Nixon"), Joseph Tropiano ("Big Night"), Robin Swicord ("Little Women"),
and Dennis Hopper ("Easy Rider," "The Last Movie").
[The film festival runs from October 2-5. It has extended its early
registration deadline to Sept. 22nd. For more information call
